What is scoliosis?
It is an abnormal curvature of spine either functional or structural. Functional scoliosis caused by pull out of normal alignment by dysfunctional soft tissue (muscles, nerves, fascia). Whereas structural scoliosis is a disease caused by the formation of spinal segments or ribs which usually begin from infant through early development ages. Now let’s we engrossed on functional scoliosis as we going to focused how wallet causes functional scoliosis.
Functional Scoliosis
As mentioned earlier, patients with functional scoliosis do have abnormal sideways of spinal curve from the actual spine’s structure. The causes are temporary as it can be caused by chronic poor posture or due to body irregularity. This introduces uneven forces such as leg-length discrepancy (LLD). Due to this, it attempts to counteract pelvic obliquity which means pelvic is misaligned. This causes one hip higher than the other, which is caused by the effort to maintain the shoulder balance. As this left untreated, it causes increase in spinal degeneration and thus causes uneven gait pattern and causes lower back pain.
What Sitting On Wallet Does To Our Spine?
Most of the man have the habit of stuffing their pocket with a lot of stuff such as wallet, phones, keys and etc. And some of the man have the habit to sit with their stuffing. YES, some man has the habit to sit on their wallet or phone which is a “BAD HABIT”. As this causes imbalances with the posture due to the height differences. Your pelvic, hip and spine will rise up towards the side of your wallet. The shift that causes due to this, causes stress and strain on the spine and the surrounding tissues such as nerves, discs, muscles and ligaments. And these stresses lead to poor posture and radiating pain into your lower back, hip, leg and feet. In long term, this causes neck and shoulder pain due to compensatory imbalance. By doing this, we actually shifting our spines away from normal and distort our posture.
To avoid this, you should avoid of placing anything bulky stuff inside your behind pocket when you sit down. How physiotherapy can help you?
